The main difference lies in the foundation and the framing structure.
Pole Barns (Post-Frame Construction):
- Use large, pressure-treated posts buried deep in the ground (below the frost line) to support the roof.
- Do not require a continuous poured concrete foundation, which significantly lowers site preparation costs.
- Allow for massive, wide-open interior spaces (clear spans) without the need for load-bearing interior walls.
Stick-Built Garages (Stud-Frame Construction):
- Require a full, continuous poured concrete foundation or basement.
- Are built using traditional 2x4 or 2x6 wall studs spaced 16 to 24 inches apart.
- Generally take longer to build and are more expensive per square foot for larger structures.
